A potentiometer is a type of variable resistor. These passive components are designed to control electrical resistance, measured in Ohms. There are many different types of potentiometers, but the principle of operation remains the same.
Analog potentiometers have a resistive track made of plastic, carbon, resistance wire windings, or cermet. Changing the position of the wiper alters the ratio of resistance between the resistors. This amount is determined by the position of the slider on the resistive track.
A typical example of a slide potentiometer application is the volume control of various audio channels and other sound parameters in sound mixers and consoles. Some still have analog slide potentiometers installed, and despite increasing digitalization, potentiometers are often used in these types of devices.
Potentiometers can also be referred to as faders, pots or potmeters.
